Search answers “where is Killarney”. Nearby answers the other question a road trip actually asks: what is around me right now.
Tap a category chip above the map and the results appear underneath it, nearest first, each with its distance from you.
The categories
On the phone, the chips are:
- Campgrounds — campsites and RV parks.
- Fuel — gas stations.
- EV charging — charging stations.
- Toilets — public toilets, including the pit toilet at a trailhead.
- Water — drinking water taps and springs.
- Trailheads — where a trail meets a road.
- Boat launches — slipways and ramps.
- Picnic — picnic sites.
- Viewpoints — marked lookouts.
The regions carry more than that, and the desktop app exposes the rest of them: shelters and huts, beaches, RV dump stations, visitor centres, medical (hospitals, clinics, pharmacies), parking and food. All of those are in the map data on every platform; the phone leads with the nine that earn their place on a small screen.
How the results are chosen
Nearby looks in a circle around you — about 25 km on the phone, which is roughly twenty minutes of driving and about as far as anyone will divert for a charger — and gives you the closest matches inside it, sorted by real distance rather than by a box on the map.
Tap a result to pin it on the map and open its card, where Route here starts directions and Save puts it in your saved places.
If a category comes back empty, there is nothing of that kind mapped within the radius. That is a fact about the map rather than a failure: 25 km around a trailhead in Algonquin genuinely has no gas station in it.
Unnamed places show their category
A great many useful things have no name — a boat launch, a privy, a picnic table. Rather than leave them blank, the app labels them by what they are: “Boat launch”, “Toilets”, “Picnic site”. That is also why they are not in search; see Search for the reasoning.
Why it is offline
Nearby is a scan of the region file you already downloaded. There is no places API behind it, no query leaving the device and nothing to report about what you looked for. It takes a millisecond or so on a province, which is why it feels instant even though nothing is cached ahead of time.
It also means the results are as current as your region. A campground that opened after your region was built will not be there until you download a newer build — see Download a map.
Zoom matters for what you see drawn
The symbols on the map itself appear at different zooms, so that a province-wide view is not a wall of icons: campgrounds show up early, fuel and toilets and water only when you are zoomed well in, and shops and restaurants later still. The Nearby list does not care — it searches the whole radius whatever the map is showing.
